In a time of restraint, there is one place where embellishment and extravagance are not only welcome but a celebrated calling card. Colombostile, which opened in an understated office building on Biscayne Boulevard just north of the Design District last October, is a centuries-old Italian furniture company that is introducing a sparkly, over-the-top brand of luxury. Pieces such as designer Carlo Rampazzi’s Swarovski-encrusted, platinum-gold-leafed armchair (affectionately known as Zsa Zsa) epitomize the company’s mandate to its collaborative of designers. And that is: design without restriction. Consequently, one sofa among the collection retails for $198,000. With a history of outfitting such far-flung sites as the Kremlin in Moscow and palaces in Saudi Arabia, Colombostile has been a go-to resource for royal interiors. To bring a little monarch-worthy flair to homes here, Colombostile offers hundreds of pieces already in production and a range of design services. It willingly customizes any existing piece or creates something completely new if the customer requests it. “Anything is possible,” showroom owner Marcello Boss insists proudly.
