Bill Diamond and Tony Baratta have been turning out top-tier interiors for almost 30 years. Their Manhattan-based firm is now 25 years old, a cause for celebration.. Enter All-American: The Exuberant Style of William Diamond and Anthony Buratta. It’s a vibrant blast of energy between hard covers from Pointed Leaf Press, the boutique bookery founded by décor guru Suzy Slesin. Designed by Stafford Cliff and featuring photography by Michel Arnaud, the tome itself is a taste of the duo’s absolutely singular take on design. Bill and Tony are not shy. Their rooms do not retire; they inspire. Bill’s the more conservative one; Tony’s more… chromatically inclined, although they collaborate on every project, including each other’s homes. Get a gander here at Bill’s vintage shingle-style cottage in East Hampton (lots of white) and Tony’s high-rise condo in Miami (lots of orange). All-American manages to highlight both the signature gestures of the partnership and the one-off nature of every opus: Anything you see in a Diamond Baratta production is custom, bespoke, unique, or, at the very least, rare. And their budgets would be the envy of many a small nation. Equally adept at stately Anglo-French classical styles and homespun vernaculars from beach cottage to log cabin, Diamond and Baratta as authors have divided their oeuvre into three chapters: “Trad” (traditional), “Folk,” and “Mod” (roughly Mid-Century Modern). Whatever look they’re working, the rooms crackle with energy and bonamie. And their witty take on their sources—a select group that includes Mies van der Rohe, Sister Parish, Gio Ponti, Matisse, and Andy Warhol—invariably induces smiles If they were fashion designers, they'd be the fraternal love twins of Vivienne Westwood and Ralph Lauren. If you like to think that modernism can include color, pattern, decoration, and sophisticated pleasures for the eye, go ALL-AMERICAN!
