When Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval, the artists behind FriendsWithYou, redesigned their website (which they refer to as their “magical portal”), they aimed to make it a true experience for the user — and they did so with great success. Run your arrow over the logo on the homepage and the illustration playfully morphs; touch an image, and it lights up, going from black and white to bright Pop-art color. In...

I moved into my house a little over two weeks ago. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to have two architects, an abstract painter and a few friends with great taste offer advice on design and placement. It has been decorating by committee, but what a committee!
Mark Hampton, a renowned architect and good friend, lives to make suggestions. He had me change the placement of my coffee tables, which are three metal...

Edouard Duval-Carrie, the Haitian-born artist who is a force of nature in Miami’s Caribbean community, is represented in major collections and museums locally and across the country. Not only do I love his work and think his studio is wonderful, but I completely admire his commitment to the arts of Haiti and the Caribbean, and to Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. As a curator, Duval-Carrie is responsible for the small but smashing exhibition, ...

I’m reading a new green cookbook/diet book about how to “weigh less and waste less” (more on that, once I finish it), and the author makes the point that we make hundreds of small decisions about what to eat every day that effect the planet.
For example, should you eat tuna or swordfish? At dinner last night a friend said she stays away from the larger fish because they tend to accumulate mercury. Frankly, I had never thought about that, I was just focusing on... -

At this month’s Miami Design-Mix 2010 — a design competition that pairs interior designers with industry suppliers — a team of Florida International University interior design students took on the grand task of creating a wedding gown.
And it wasn’t all ribbons and lace.
Fort Lauderdale flooring company Resource 4 Floors was the group’s sponsor, so they had to...

Buying a house and watching my bank account dwindle should affect my spending habits, and it has, but I can’t stop myself from spending on my new house. I want it to be perfect and I want it now. I can’t live another minute with my old red counter stools; they look terrible in my new space. I can’t live without new nightstands.

Conflict resolved. I ended up buying two of the tall wood bed frames from West Elm for $299 each.
I decided against the Trondheim from Ikea because it was just too much bed for the room. The West Elm bed frames were perfect, tall enough to accommodate under-the-bed storage drawers, but low enough not to obstruct...

While the mag-alogue concept may not have worked for design (i.e. the death of Domino), instant gratification — where you click and buy — makes a blog-alogue brilliant. Design-Milk, for one, chronicles lust-worthy objects, many of which are available for purchase. The selections are new, noteworthy, often high-design pieces with an eco-friendly slant. And the site is often the first to cover collaborations and mass-market lines by...

The other day I was lucky enough to tag along with the new chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Rocco Landesman, as he paid a visit to Miami. It was one of the recent rainy days, so the city itself was not showing the way it can in our more usual fierce bright white sunlight. But the chairman (and all his staff calls him that, which is actually a little scarily almost totalitarian-sounding) didn’t seem to notice. (He did happily borrow my Marimekko umbrella at one...

Images of Miami Beach’s 10 whimsical, jaunty lifeguard stands show up frequently in everything from books to films. You’d think they were a permanent feature of our famous beaches, but actually they aren’t. All but three of them were blown apart in hurricane winds and replaced, by the City of Miami Beach, with much less iconic designs. The remaining three (including the one on this page, which was moved to North Beach in front of Canyon Ranch Living) still populate the sands. ...
